By joining our carbon program, you can understand, manage and take action based on your organization’s emissions from cargo shipments with Avianca.
At Avianca, we purchase an average of 617,000 tonnes of certified carbon offsets credits per year. Carbon offset projects aim to reduce or remove and are certified by international standards like . We open up this program to give you the option of supporting a selection of climate projects in the regions we operate.
What is an emissions footprint?
A greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions footprint, also referred to informally as a carbon footprint, is an estimation of all the greenhouse gas emissions that result from activies, transactions, or operations – such as a flight. The CO2e emissions of transporting cargo depending on the weight of the shipent, the aircraft used, the distance flown, among other factors.
How are emissions calculated?
Emissions for your air freight shipments use conversion factors published by the in 2022 and are measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalency (tCo2e). tCO2e is a unit of measurement that normalizes emissions from various GHG on the basis of their global-warming potential by converting amounts of other GHG to the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide with the same global warming potential (for further information on the term carbon dioxide equivalent, .) The emissions estimation results you see here as part of this program do not represent the actual emissions generated from the transportation of your cargo.
What is carbon offsetting and how does it work?
Carbon offsetting is a mechanism that enables individuals and organizations to support certified third-party projects that contribute to the reduction or removal of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The support of carbon offset projects has no direct effect on the flights for which the emissions have been estimated. Certified projects issue carbon credits, which act as an instrument for selling or trading the project’s removal or reduction impact. Each carbon credit aims to represent a single unit of GHG emissions (being one (1) tonne carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) that is reduced or removed from the atmosphere or the carbon cycle. A unit of GHG emissions can be reduced or removed through various methods or project types. Carbon offsetting – the retirement of carbon credits in an amount based on an estimated carbon footprint – provides financing for certified carbon projects. Within carbon offsetting there are complexities and concerns around proving that one carbon credit equates to exactly one tonne of emissions impact. In reality, calculations are based on assumptions and estimates, and some credits may deliver less and some may deliver more impact. However, project certification is designed to be conservative, to minimise uncertainties and to help ensure that the carbon credits work as intended, with one-to-one representation. A project's ability to issue offsets depends on a set of rigorous conditions – in order for a project to issue offsets, the emission reductions or removals must be validated as additional, measurable, auditable, permanent, and unique.
How can I join the carbon program, and how does it work?
As an Avianca Cargo Carbon Program Member, you will have access to a dedicated portal where you can review emissions reports, support climate projects, view detailed order history and analysis, and track your company's cumulative impact related to the climate projects you support. To activate your account, send us a request using the contact form at the bottom of this page. Once your request is received, your Avianca Cargo representative will contact you to get started.
